College of Charleston

Located in downtown Charleston, the College of Charleston is a public, liberal arts university with approximately 10,000 students. Founded in 1770, the campus is an eclectic mix of historic brick buildings and modern, state-of-the-art facilities, all adorned with mature oaks, date palms, colorful azaleas, and hibiscus shrubbery. Aside from academic studies, CofC students enjoy Charleston’s casual cuisine establishments such as Caviar and Bananas, Black Tap Coffee, and The Tattooed Moose; famed restaurants such as The Macintosh, Husk, and Fig; and vibrant nightlife spots like Cocktail Club, The Blind Tiger, and Charleston Beer Works. The College of Charleston has on-site dormitories, but many upperclassmen opt to rent a loft apartment on King Street or share a Charleston single with roommates in nearby neighborhoods such as Harleston Village, Cannonborough, or Radcliffeborough. From these downtown neighborhoods, students can easily walk, bike, or skate to classes.

 

The Citadel

The Citadel, whose military prestige lends to a more principled environment, is a revered Charleston landmark. Founded in 1842, the Citadel’s Corps of Cadets is nationally recognized as future military commanders, innovative entrepreneurs, and successful businessmen and businesswomen. The camaraderie of the corp extends beyond the guarded walls of the campus. The tight-knit group of graduates fully support one another in future endeavors and cultivate a network that embodies the Citadel’s philosophy of integrity and steadfast work. Earning a degree from the Citadel and donning its signature class ring is an honor reserved only for those diligent, determined, and deliberate cadet graduates. The Citadel is located near Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park and, during free time off campus, cadets enjoy watching the Charleston Riverdogs play baseball, relaxing at the school’s Isle of Palms beach house, and hanging out on Upper King Street.


Charleston Southern University

Located in North Charleston, Charleston Southern University is a private, faith-based, liberal arts college that offers more than 45 undergraduate degrees including primary and secondary education, nursing, business administration, biology, music, and Christian ministries. Additionally, the school offers eight graduate programs including criminal justice, computer science, and organizational management. The school has a robust athletic program, boasting nationally-ranked football, basketball, and baseball teams as well as an active intramural sports league, service clubs, and academic organizations.

 

MUSC

For graduates wishing to pursue an occupation in the medical field, the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is a highly respected institution that offers masters’ degrees in general medicine, dermatology, dental medicine, nursing, and health professions. The school is known for its specializations including neuroscience, oncology, pediatrics, and many others. Students, residents, and fellows at MUSC typically find rental homes in downtown Charleston, James Island, Mt. Pleasant, or West Ashley.
