In addition to the beautiful beaches, rich history, ample golf courses and idyllic weather, Charleston offers unique employment opportunities with its many area employers. One of the biggest of these employers is Boeing South Carolina, which boasts a 265-acre main campus in North Charleston.

Responsible for fabricating, assembling and installing systems for the rear fuselage sections of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Boeing South Carolina serves as the final assembly location for the twin-engine jet airliner. Within the 471,825-square-foot facility, the aft body team manufactures and assembles sections 47 and 48 of the plane. Not only is section 47 the last passenger section in the plane, but section 48 integrates the vertical and horizontal stabilizers as well as the aft pressure bulkhead.

After the aft and midbody sections are completed within the South Carolina plant, they are either delivered to Everett, Washington or sent across campus to the Dreamliner final assembly and delivery line that was established in July 2001. The 1.2-million-square-foot facility produced its first final assembly on April 27, 2012.

Shortly after the final assembly and delivery line was opened, the company opened its Boeing South Carolina Delivery Center. Opened on November 11, 2011, the 57,920-square-foot facility delivers 787s to customers around the world. Today, the facility is one of only three sites in the world to assemble and deliver twin-aisle commercial airplanes. On December 1, 2011, the company opened a new facility to supply 787 interior parts to the North Charleston site. The 305,000-square-foot facility will be located just 10 miles from the final assembly and delivery site.

Boeing also has plans for additional expansions to the company in South Carolina, which will bring more employment opportunities to the area. In early 2013, the company announced its plans to build an IT Center of Excellence and an Engineering Design Center in South Carolina. Assembly for the new facility is expected to begin sometime in the middle of the year.
