Ex-Palm Beach County Mayor Shelley Vana gave her final “State of the County” address on Thursday morning. Mayor Vana’s term had actually ended two days before the speech, but she still found time to give a highly optimistic account of the county’s fortunes to the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches.
The former mayor decided to go off-book and speak from the heart at the Chamber’s breakfast meeting at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. Vana admitted that the county has still not recovered fully from the 2008 financial crash, but she listed a litany of reasons to feel good about the region’s future. Some of the most positive developments in the county include enormous new research complexes in the north and the new Major League Baseball spring training facility that is currently under construction. Another accomplishment of Vana’s tenure was the overhaul of Palm Tran Connection in response to concerns from the elderly and disabled.
While Palm Beach County, like any other place, has its share of challenges, Vana’s speech highlighted how many developments in the region are worth celebrating. In Vana’s words, “Who would want to live anywhere else?”
