What’s New in Kiawah

Kiawah Island always offers a variety of things to do in August. But with the beginning and completion of several new developments, there is more happening than ever. Here are three big updates about what’s going on in the area.

Activities at the New and Improved Sandcastle Clubhouse

The Kiawah Island Community Association clubhouse has reopened after eight months of renovations. Visit the Sandcastle for a dip in the refreshed family pool or oceanfront pool, or try a fitness class with an ocean view.

The Castle Grille and Sandbar are now serving beachy beverages and fresh food by Cru Catering. For a family-friendly event, join the Castle Grille for music by award-winning drummer Nick Kelly and a new summer menu. Weather permitting, these events will take place each Thursday through the end of the month from 5 to 7 p.m.

On Thursday, August 30, you can also join the ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the Sandcastle’s official grand opening from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Boardwalk 8B will be closed until the new bathhouse opens by the adult pool. While that is still under construction, the rest of the facilities have reopened.

Family-friendly Visits with the Loggerhead Turtles

It’s the middle of nesting season for the loggerhead turtles, one of only seven species of marine turtles still in existence today. Kiawah Island boasts one of the largest turtle patrol volunteer programs in the country. If you’re looking for family-friendly things to do, there are two ways you can join the turtle patrol:

  1. Tag along with the hatching patrol, starting daily at 6 a.m. Look for volunteers in the lime green turtle patrol shirts at each section of the beach.
  2. Observe a nest evaluation, scheduled through October.
Nesting season officially runs through October 31.

Construction at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort

The Kiawah Island Golf Resort has started construction on three big projects in the historic West Beach area. When complete, these new facilities will offer a variety of activities year-round.

The West Beach Village Hotel is a luxury beachfront property that will feature 150 suites and guest rooms, as well as a grand boardwalk along the dunes. Food and beverage options will be abundant, with a two-story oceanfront restaurant, casual poolside dining, a club-level lounge, lobby bar and coffee shop. Amenities will include a full-service spa, adult and family pools, and 10 retail shops. The grand opening is scheduled for fall 2020.

The West Beach Conference Center will be just inside the main entry gate to Kiawah Island and within walking distance of the new hotel. The conference center will offer 23,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting space, with elegant décor and state-of-the-art technology. The grand opening is set for fall of next year.

The new clubhouse at Cougar Point Golf Course will feature a grand lobby, full-service pro shop, sports bar and tavern, and locker rooms. The stunning new building will be on a terrace with sweeping views of the 18th hole and the new beachfront hotel. The grand opening is planned for the spring of 2019.

The internationally recognized resort will complete all construction in time to host the PGA Championship in 2021. Visit the Kiawah Island Golf Resort events calendar for more activities in Kiawah/Seabrook.
