Located off Maybank Highway near the Riverland Road intersection in James Island, the well-established Riverland Terrace community was developed in the 1940s. As the oldest neighborhood in James Island, Riverland Terrace is characterized by its 73 live oak trees that are each more than 100 years old. With approximately 800 homes within the community, homes range in size from 800 to 4,800 square feet. Floor plans range from two-bedroom to six-bedroom, with lots ranging from 0.15 to 0.5 acres. A few townhomes are also available in the neighborhood. Residents of Riverland Terrace enjoy access to a number of neighborhood amenities, including a playground, a public boat landing on the Stono River, several antique shops, numerous restaurants and the Charleston Municipal Golf Course. Fort Pemberton, which is a Civil War fortification built in 1862, remains within the community. The community is also located along the inland waterway and Wappoo Creek, while downtown Charleston and all of its amenities are just 10 minutes away. James Island County Park is also just a few minutes away from the Riverland Terrace community.
