On September 25th, the Cream Literary Alliance held its inaugural event at the West Palm Beach restaurant Aioli. Cream is a nonprofit organization that seeks to bring Palm Beach area writers together and promote their work with events and public outreach initiatives.

Cream’s event at Aioli featured hors d’oeuvres and wine followed by a series of readings by members of the group. Two stories dealt with themes of loss and grief. One story, “Marianne’s Tan” by Florida International University’s Lynne Barrett, left some listeners so flabbergasted that their mouths hung open. Barrett also ran Cream’s first ever writers’ workshop.

Other initiatives the organization hopes to accomplish are a scholarship program and an oral history of West Palm Beach. If all of these efforts go well, this ambitious organization will have done an incredible job of raising Palm Beach’s standing as a literary destination. It has already done an incredible job bringing the county’s literary-minded people together.
