The town itself was developed by Charlie Martyn, the real estate developer who built the community of Jupiter Inlet Colony. Martyn discovered an Indian mound on the peninsula of Jupiter Inlet Beach that belonged to the Tequesta Indian Tribe. Thus, the tribe’s namesake was used for both the country club and the village. Incorporated in 1957, Tequesta covers a total area of 1.8 square miles of land and is populated by less than 6,000 total residents (2010 Census). As such, the seemingly sleepy fishing town clings to its simple motto: “Our way.”
