Friends,

I'm not a baseball fan, but I do remember the 2004 ALCS series when the Boston Red Sox had lost three straight games against the New York Yankees. In one of sports most miraculous comebacks, the Red Sox rallied together and won the next four games to move on to the World Series. There, in four easy games, they swept the St Louis Cardinals, a team who actually held the best season record. Prior to this championship, the Red Sox had not won a World Series since 1918. Oh, they came close several times. In fact, fans referred to their bad luck as the "curse of the Bambino," a reference to when owner Harry Frazee traded Babe Ruth to the Yankees in 1920. For the Red Sox to come from behind, beat their NY nemeses, and then sweep the Cardinals is a story for the history books.

What if 2020 has the same comeback story? The first few innings have been overwhelming and defeating. Now, whenever anything goes wrong, we chalk it up as another 2020 casualty. We aren't even surprised. And maybe, we aren't even trying. We want to leave the field, hide in the dugout, and wait for 2021. Wait for the elections to be over. Wait for the riots to subside. Wait for a vaccine. Wait to call back a client. Wait to make a change. We consider 2020 a loss, and the game isn't even over.

I've heard it said that the COMEBACK is always stronger than the SETBACK. We have three more months of 2020. Will we complain, criticize, and cower to the setback? Or will we continue to compete, capitalize on opportunity, and create our own comeback story?

After breaking the curse and the 86 year setback in 2004, the Red Sox won the World Series again in 2007, 2013, 2018, proving their comeback was no fluke. I believe the same comeback victory is possible for each of us if we want it. Already, good things ARE happening in our world, nation, community, and business (You just have to seek those stories through all the negative headlines).
