Measuring a mere 32.5 square miles, Goose Creek surprisingly has some of the best outdoor parks and recreational amenities in the Charleston area. On pleasant afternoons, families enjoy spending time at Lake Greenview Park, Oak Creek Park, Fairfax Park, or Forest Lawn Park, all of which have a designated picnic area, grills, and playgrounds. Teenagers and adults enjoy playing pickup basketball games at Etling Park and Eubanks Park, while baseball fans enjoy cheering on local recreational and travel teams at Felkel Park or Dennis Park. Dogwood Park is the main site for soccer and football games, and it also has a playground and picnic area. Perhaps one of the city’s most coveted outdoor attraction is the Marrington Plantation Bike Trail, a 13-mile loop that meanders through the coastal wetlands and provides a moderately challenging course with jumps, twists, and turns. Bikers frequently see white-tail deer, bobcats, racoons, and other native wildlife. The trail is also open to horses, making a perfect backdrop for a fox hunt trail ride. During inclement weather, residents enjoy the Goose Creek Community Center, an expansive facility that features two gymnasiums, an indoor walking track, climbing wall, fitness facility, and classrooms for various educational and after-school programs. However, most of the educational and youth programs such as gymnastics, dance, art, yoga, and martial arts are held at the nearby Casey Community Center.
Adding to its family focus, children residing in Goose Creek mostly attend the same school system: Sedgefield Middle School and Goose Creek High School. For elementary grades, students attend either Goose Creek Elementary, Boulder Bluff Elementary or Howe Elementary. Offering an art-infused education, Howe Elementary is an excellent rated magnet school that uses an application and lottery system for admittance. Families in Crowfield Plantation are zoned for College Park Elementary, College Park Middle, and Stratford High School. All schools in Goose Creek are governed by the Berkeley County School District.
Located less than 20 minutes from downtown Charleston and less than ten minutes from North Charleston, residents of Goose Creek appreciate the close proximity to the plethora of fine dining establishments, specialty boutiques, and entertainment venues including the North Charleston Performing Arts Center and the Charleston Music Hall. The nearby Northwoods Mall offers popular indoor clothing and sporting good stores and is anchored by Belks, Dillard’s, and Sears. Within its own city limits, Goose Creek has a few spots that locals frequent for casual dinners and cold beers. These include Sapphires Sports Bar and Grill, Los Arcos Mexican Restaurant, Sushi 101, St. James Place, and Tropical Kitchen.
Although Goose Creek did not officially incorporate until 1961, the region’s history dates back to the colonial times of the mid 1600s. Early pioneers, many of whom hailed from Barbados, began to settle in the region and cultivate the land for rice, indigo, and other commodities. After the Civil War, many of the plantations were abandoned and African Americans began dividing the land into personal farms and acreage. The rural region became more commercialized after World War II, when military command centers invested in the area. The Charleston Air Force Base was built in 1941 and brought many military personnel and their families to the Goose Creek area. Since its closing, the Joint Charleston Base has become the central location for most of Charleston’s military influx. Currently, more than 60 Department of Defense and federal agencies operate out of the Joint Charleston Base, which is located in North Charleston.
As Charleston continues to experience tremendous growth, so does the sprawling suburb of Goose Creek. New neighborhoods, developments, and commercial businesses are being consistently being approved for construction. However, despite the growth, Goose Creek clings to its small-town roots.
