Affiliated with Charleston County School District but independently managed, James Island Charter High School offers students unique programs and pathways such as an International Baccalaureate (I.B.) program and a “Project Lead the Way” path, which is a pre-engineering academic intensive. All of the James Island public schools have an above average or excellent rating and many are recipients of blue ribbon awards. Private school options include James Island Christian School and the Porter-Gaud School, one of Charleston’s oldest educational institutions with an establishment date of 1867.
On the weekends, residents enjoy fishing, crabbing, biking, golfing, or spending the afternoon at historic McLeod Plantation, a former sea island cotton farm built in 1851. Golf enthusiasts need not travel far to tee off on coastal fairways as the City of Charleston Municipal Course is located on James Island. Commonly known as “the muni,” this course is a local favorite for golfers who enjoy leisurely play. The Country Club II of Charleston, a private residential golf community with a rich history dating back to 1786, is a more challenging course designed by golf architect Seth Raynor. In addition to golf, the Country Club of Charleston also boasts a spectacular tennis facility, swimming pool, fitness center, and clubhouse.
James Island County Park is the perfect place for saltwater fishing, crabbing, hiking, and biking. The park has designated areas for grilling and picnicking and also features an entire outdoor zone with a challenge course, slackline, climbing wall, and 18-hole disc golf course. Additionally, the park serves as the venue for the annual Holiday Festival of Lights, an event that runs from mid November through the first week of January. The festival showcases three miles of thematic light structures and concludes with food, s'mores, games, exhibits, and Ole St. Nick himself at Santa’s Village. For the more adventurous souls, the Wild Blue Adventure Park ropes course presents more than 70 suspended obstacles reaching an altitude of 35-feet! The park hosts team-building exercises, summer camps, and individual or team courses.
Though still considered a small town, James Island has experienced vibrant and steadfast growth the past few decades, especially with the completion of the James Island Connector in the early 1990s. The roadway contributed to the real estate boom and new development as home-buyers appreciated the short commute to downtown Charleston and Folly Beach. Because apartment rentals on James Island are less expensive than downtown Charleston, many students at the College of Charleston and MUSC opt for this region.
